Whether you want to build a successful business, write a book, or get a promotion, you need to invest in yourself to become the person that’s capable of achieving these things.
That’s why, in my eyes, self-improvement is at the root of all achievement. To use the words of legendary self-development speaker Jim Rohn:
“Your level of success will seldom exceed your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.”
Therefore, in this article, I’ll share the five ways to accelerate your personal growth. This will help you get better results and achieve your goals faster than ever before.
#1: Transform ‘Dead’ Time Into Self-Improvement Time
Our days are filled with a lot of ‘dead time.’ During these moments, we don’t do much. For example, things like your daily commute to work, waiting for your coffee at Starbucks or showering are all moments in which we waste valuable time while not really doing anything worthwhile.
Fortunately, however, there’s a way to transform this dead time into productive time: listening to podcasts or audiobooks.
By listening to audiobooks or podcasts, you can gain new insights and learn valuable new lessons in the time that we would usually waste. Contrary to reading a physical book on-the-go, listening to audiobooks or podcasts is much more convenient.
For example, you don’t have to carry anything with you aside from your smartphone and earplugs. Furthermore, you can consume valuable content in a way that physical books don’t allow — while moving from one bus to another or while walking outside, for example.
I’ve gained an immense amount of valuable knowledge from audiobooks and podcasts that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. In fact, through apps like Audible, I’m able to read a full extra book per month without spending that much effort.
Some of my favorite audiobooks are Atomic Habits, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Eat That Frog. Besides audiobooks, I love listening to podcasts such as The Tim Ferriss Show, The Ground Up, and The James Altucher Show.
#2: Get A ‘Success Partner’
Just like a boxer needs partners to spar with to grow and become better, you need a ‘success partner’ to accelerate your personal growth. Alone, you can do a lot. But it’s worth finding a ‘success partner’ who you can exchange ideas, insights, and lessons with if you genuinely want to go to the next level.
By explaining newly gained lessons to someone else, you internalize them yourself. They ‘click’ much better when you have to explain them to someone else clearly.
Furthermore, your success partner may stumble upon insights, books, and blogs that you wouldn’t have discovered by yourself. Not only will this accelerate your personal growth, but the whole ride will become a lot more fun as well.
For example, I started my entrepreneurship and personal growth journey together with two of my friends. We’d share all the valuable insights we gained, books we read and mentors we stumbled upon. Because of this, I developed myself much faster than I ever could on my own.
#3: Join A ‘Mastermind’
A mastermind is a group of like-minded individuals that regularly meet together (whether offline or online) to discuss each other’s challenges, goals, and endeavors. In my opinion, joining a mastermind is one of the most valuable things you can do to make faster progress in your personal and professional life.
If you put a few highly ambitious and knowledge people in a room, a synergy will be created that produces a result even bigger than the sum of all parts. When great minds come together, amazing things happen. Big problems get solved, new ideas form and even new businesses are founded.
The challenges or obstacles that I present to my mastermind group get solved much faster and better than I can ever do on my own.
Furthermore, the regular meetings with the mastermind made me highly consistent with my own productivity. Knowing that we would meet every month, I’d do anything to make real progress. I didn’t want to show up with zero results and zero progress month after month. This form of accountability is incredibly important to keep yourself going strong at times where you’d typically slack or give up.
All in all, I’d highly recommend you join a mastermind group or form one yourself. It will inspire and fuel you as few other things can.
#4: Get A Coach
If you genuinely take your goals seriously, I recommend you get a coach. A coach will make sure you make consistent progress, overcome challenges & obstacles, and get the results you desire.
If you want to lose weight or gain muscle mass, get a fitness coach. If you want to become better at sales, hire a sales coach. If you want to be productive, and make progress towards your goals consistently, get a peak performance coach.
Getting a high-quality coach isn’t always cheap. However, doing so will accelerate your personal and professional growth like no other.
For example, it’s exactly because of my fitness coach that I was physically in my best shape ever to run a 19 kilometer (12 miles) obstacle run. Without my coach, I would’ve undoubtedly been in worse shape and have more trouble during the run.
A high-quality coach will never let you off the hook simply because it’s his or her job to help you get maximum results. In my eyes, it’s the most powerful way to accelerate your personal growth and definitely worth the investment.
#5: Make Your Journey Public
Another way to accelerate your personal growth is by making your journey public (to the extent that you are comfortable with). I have to admit it might not be for everyone. But for me, it has completely changed my life.
You could, for example, start a podcast, YouTube account, Instagram account, or blog (like mine) dedicated to your self-improvement. The goal should be to share your own insights and learnings into articles, podcasts, videos, or images so you’ll grasp the concepts even better yourself.
If anything else comes out of this project — readers, subscribers, or even extra income — it’s a nice bonus!
If there’s one thing that starting my blog has caused, it’s the fact that I’ve learned more about productivity, human behavior, biohacking and peak performance than ever before. Forcing myself to write articles in ways that others can clearly understand has helped me grasp these concepts much better myself.
Nowadays, with platforms like Medium, YouTube, Anchor, and Instagram, it’s easier than ever to create and share content around your topic of interest. There’s no excuse anymore not to do it.
Now Do It
